COMPRESSOR
Compressor tightens a recording by turning down loud peaks, bringing a voice or guitar under control. Use it when you want firmer attacks and more punch, with a little studio color as it works harder.
Controls
INPUT
- Range
- -6dB to +30dB
- Default
- +5dB
Pushes the sound into compression: turn it up to catch more peaks and hold loud notes back. The added input gain is removed afterwards, so this controls how hard the compressor works rather than acting as a volume knob.
OUTPUT
- Range
- -12dB to +12dB
- Default
- 0.0dB
Sets the level of the compressed sound after compression. Raise it if the recording has become too quiet, or lower it before the next effect if it is too loud.
MIX
- Range
- 0% to 100%
- Default
- 100%
Blends the compressed sound with the uncompressed recording. Lower it to keep the original attack while adding a steadier body underneath.
ATTACK
- Range
- 0.50ms to 30ms
- Default
- 0.50ms
- Without Pro
- 0.50ms
Sets how quickly compression catches the start of a note. Shorter times tame sharp picks and consonants, longer times let more of the first hit through for punch.
RELEASE
- Range
- 50ms to 1.0s
- Default
- 166ms
- Without Pro
- 166ms
Sets how quickly compression lets go after a loud note, with a slower recovery after sustained compression. Shorten it for a lively bounce, lengthen it if the level seems to surge between notes.
RATIO
- Steps
- 4:1 · 8:1 · 12:1 · 20:1 · ALL
- Default
- 4:1
- Without Pro
- 4:1
Sets how firmly loud peaks are held back: higher ratios give stronger control. ALL adds a more aggressive, colored sound, useful blended in with MIX.
SC HPF
- Range
- 20Hz to 300Hz
- Default
- 45Hz
- Without Pro
- 45Hz
Makes the compressor less sensitive to bass and rumble without cutting bass from the sound itself. Raise it if a low guitar note pulls the whole recording down.
Start here
For voice and acoustic guitar, start with INPUT at +5dB, OUTPUT at 0.0dB and MIX at 100%. Raise INPUT until the loud words and strums sit closer to the softer ones, then back it off if the performance loses its movement.
Questions
How do I stop loud strums jumping out?
Raise INPUT a little and listen to the hardest strums. If the first hit still jumps out, try ATTACK at 1.0ms and RATIO at 4:1.
How do I keep the pick attack?
Try ATTACK at 10ms so the front of the note gets through before compression catches it. If the result still feels too flat, lower MIX to 70%.
Should I use Compressor or Opto on a vocal?
Use Compressor when loud consonants and sudden peaks need tightening. Choose Opto when you want a smoother, steadier phrase without catching every attack so firmly.
