Record wherever the idea arrives

Use the iPad to browse your library beside a recording, or the Apple Watch to catch an idea from your wrist. Record controls and shortcuts open Music Dawn straight into capture so you can start without browsing the library.

Work beside your library on iPad

At a wide window size, Music Dawn shows a sidebar, a recording list and the selected recording side by side. Choose All, Favorites or a folder in the sidebar, then select a recording in the list to open it in the workspace.

Use Toggle folders to hide or show the sidebar. Use Maximize song to give the selected recording the whole workspace, then Restore layout to return to the columns. Trimming expands the workspace and restores your previous layout when you finish.

The sidebar also has Import Audio, Tuner and Settings; use Record in the recording list to capture a new recording. At compact window widths, Music Dawn uses the same library and navigation flow as iPhone.

Record with the Watch

  1. Open Music Dawn on Apple Watch and tap the red microphone button. Allow microphone access if asked, then location access if you want the recording grouped by place.
  2. Play or sing your idea. The timer and level strip show the recording as you record.
  3. Tap the center pause button to pause; tap it again to resume.
  4. Tap the checkmark to save, or the X to discard.

After saving, the Watch shows Saved and Syncing to iPhone. The audio queues for transfer to your paired iPhone, even when the phone is unreachable. When it arrives, it becomes a recording in the phone's library with the default sound applied, and the phone names its place when Tag Location is on. Private iCloud sync can then carry it to your iPad.

Start from the Lock Screen or Control Center

Add Music Dawn's circular Record widget when editing your iPhone Lock Screen. Tapping it opens Music Dawn and starts capture, subject to microphone permission.

Add Music Dawn's Record control in Control Center for the same quick entry. Both open the app to record; save or discard the recording there.

Start with Siri or Shortcuts

Say “Start recording in Music Dawn”, “Record in Music Dawn” or “Capture an idea in Music Dawn” to Siri. The app opens and starts capture, subject to microphone permission.

In Shortcuts, use Music Dawn's Start Recording action, also offered as the Record app shortcut. The Watch has its own Start Recording action for wrist capture. On Apple Watch Ultra, you can use that action in a shortcut assigned to the Action button.

Questions

Can I record on Apple Watch without my iPhone nearby?

Yes. The Watch records locally and queues the saved file for transfer to the paired iPhone when the system can deliver it.

Does Syncing to iPhone mean the recording is already on my phone?

No. That message appears when the Watch queues the transfer; check the iPhone library for the delivered recording.

Can I listen to my library or add effects on the Watch?

The Watch app is for capture, pause, save and discard. Listen to the delivered recording and shape its sound on iPhone or iPad.

Can a shortcut stop a recording or open the tuner?

Music Dawn exposes a Start Recording action. There are no separate actions for stopping a recording, opening the tuner or playing a recording.
